IBM Sucks

First, they never told our business office that the Tivoli software had been made available to another guy in my department, who was the default contact for IBM since he’d ordered software from them before. So, I had to get a “Passport Advantage” login and re-download the software I needed.

Then, they thought I didn’t have a licensed version of the server software I was supposed to be installing, so they made me go download it again. This actually fixed the first problem.

Then, I have install something called the “Integrated Solutions Console”, a gargantuan 500-meg Java-based FRONT END (Yes, the *Front End* is 500 Megs).

Which failed. It took me three days to determine the nature of the failure. I had to look in one log file, which told me to look in another log file, which said, in CLEAR TEXT,

CWLAA9082: Laptop123! is not a valid value for the key -W securityConfig.adminPass

Their tech support then informed me that my password must be at least 5 characters! Well, she was wrong, the problem was that it may not contain an EXCLAMATION POINT! My intuition was correct, and finally, this 500 mb “Up to 2 hours” installation was done… Or was it?

NO! Because now, the integrated solutions console was installed, but it’s only the FRAMEWORK for what I REALLY need, which is the ADMINISTRATION console! Do you think that it installs?

If you said, Yes, YOU ARE WRONG!!! it does not install!!! Why? Well, because

ERROR: Unable to add health monitor jar to classpath.

So now I’m on my 3rd PMR with IBM! simply to get the product INSTALLED.

Look at the following. don’t read it, just observe how huge it is. It’s all my cut & pastes from their support back & forth.

So now I get to try and install the administration console.
and… IT FAILS! WHAT A SURPRISE!!!
SEE ATTACHED!!!

Entered on 11/22/2006 at 09:37:30 by :
Oh my god the problem was:
THE PASSWORD MAY NOT CONTAIN EXCLAMATION POINTS.
To find this out I had to open a tech support ticket with IBM and go back and forth
for three days, and turns out they didn’t really help at all, I just took closer
looks at the error messages. I had to open one log file, which told me to look in
another file, which said something about “Password not good enough” (paraphrasing
that really bad), and I realized that… they probably didn’t like my extra
punctuation mark in the password field!!!!!!
Absolutely ridiculous. I will be forwarding a complaint to IBM. Three days because
they didn’t include passport validation on the first screen, or even warn me what the
restrictions on the password were!
————————————————————————————–
Hi
Great! I’m glad you figured out the problem. I will update the PMR with this info.
Marketing will be the right place to take customer complaints/suggestions on this
product. If they get enough hits on the same issue then development creates a patch.
You can reach Marketing at 1-800-IBM-4YOU. Have a great Thanksgiving!

Subject RE: PMR 19905,999,000

IT WORKED! I think I know what the problem was.
I had an exclamation point as part of the original password I was using. If you try
it yourself, I think you’ll notice that that does not work.
Now, would it be out of line for me to suggest that perhaps one extra line of text in
the install program might’ve saved me 3 days of work? Sorry. I don’t mean to come
down on you. It’s a development team problem, not a support team problem, I know. But
Does IBM ever do usability studies? It seems common sense to any developer that if
you’re asking for some input field, and that input field has certain restrictions
that will crash your program 10 minutes later, that you do DATA VALIDATION on them
BEFORE any any attempt at processing is made. The install program could easily be
made to say, “Please enter a password (minimum 5 characters, uppercase, lowercase,
and digits only):”
Otherwise you end up with irate users like me, who cause headaches for the poor
support group. 🙂
Anyway, you may consider this PMR Closed, and thanks for your support.

Windows
Perform the following steps to manually remove the ISC on Windows platforms:
1. Stop the following services:
IBM WebSphere Application Server V6 – ISC service ISChelp
If the ISC has not been installed as a Windows service, manually stop the ISC process
and the Help process.
2. Remove the InstallShield registry entries for the ISC installation: open
the text file <installation_directory>\vpd.properties and remove all the rows
containing a reference to the ISC.
3. Remove the InstallShield registry entries for the TDWB Web Console
installation: delete the directory C:\Program Files\Common
Files\InstallShield\Universal\TDWBWUI.
4. If the ISC has been installed as a Windows service (that is, the ISC
service name is ISC and the ISC Help service name is ISCHelp), run the following:
C:\Programs Files\IBM\ISC\AppServer\bin\WASService.exe -remove ISC
C:\Programs Files\IBM\ISC\PortalServer\ISCEclipse\EclipseSvc.exe -delete ISCHelp
“C:\Program Files\IBM\ISC\PortalServer\ISCEclipse”
5. Optionally, run regedit and remove the ISC uninstaller key in the Windows
Registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\a03abff7618ec3f834f334938d4a0895797834118
6. Remove the directory where the ISC has been installed (for example,
C:\Program Files\IBM\ISC).
7. You might need to reboot the system

Hi
Looks like the server is up and running now so you should be able to connect to it.
The Integrated Service Console (ISC) and Administration Center (AC) needs to be
installed to provide for web administration. This can be downloaded from the
following URL. See the README file for requirements and install instructions
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/admincenter/v5r3/LATEST/
You can also access the TSM server from the server commandline by running dsmadmc.
TSM docs can be accessed from:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tivihelp/v1r1/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.itsmaixn.doc/
The main docs for the TSM server is the Administrator’s Guide and the Administrator’s
Reference.
Supportline requires a separate PMR be opened for each issue, so if you need
assistance with any other topics please open a new PMR.
I will leave this PMR open until the end of the day in case you have any more
questions about the server install.
Thank you for using IBM Support,

There does not appear to be any immediate solution. I’m going to just get a cup of
coffee, sit down, and read the entire Administrator Manual and Installation Manual.

Entered on 11/16/2006 at 12:46:45 by :
I also tried to install the Integrated Solutions Console and Admin Center to my PC,
and did it work? OF COURSE NOT. Never mind the fact that it says it’ll take up to TWO
HOURS to install!!!!!!!!!! TWO HOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yesterday I re-downloaded files from IBM, and put the descriptions in a PDF because
the filenames are not meaningful.
I have been trading e-mails with the IBM guy some more. Here are the current updates.
DO NOT ask me why the fonts continually increase as the replies get longer.
Hi ,
If the original server code was obtained from the IBM ftp site it will have
everything needed except for the permanent license files and that’s why you needed to
get the Server package from Passport Advantage that has the permanent license files
and install just the license. Everything else should be okay.

OK.
What about the other packages? Should I de-install them and re-install them as well
using the new files from this verified Passport-advantage archive? or does that
matter? I notice that the tar.gz files are different sizes, so the ones that were
installed already could be different.

Hi
The issue is you need to get a TSM server version that contains the license files.
TSM server containing license files can only be obtained from Sales or Passport
Advantage. Once you have obtained this version you only need to install the licenses.
From Chapter1 of the Installation Guide
Evaluation (Try and Buy) Product
A 60-day evaluation (try and buy) of IBM Tivoli Storage Manager is available on CD.
The CD try and buy version provides the same functions as the standard licensed
product. However, the licensing package is not available with the try and buy
product, and you are limited to 50 clients.
The installation instructions in this chapter (“Installation and Configuration” on
page 6) apply to both the standard licensed product and the CD try and buy product.
Note: You can apply maintenance to a try and buy version of IBM Tivoli Storage Manager.
To upgrade to the licensed product, do the following:
1. Mount the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager server licensed product CD in your CD drive.
2. Install the license package (TIVsm-license .
Only the license file is installed, and no server or user data is lost. After
installing the license package, register any licensed features that you purchased.

OK, the dude on the phone (I gave in and called the call center) pointed me to the
downloads page, and he indicated that these files will NOT require any license keys;
that they are somehow built in. Do you agree with that?
Attached is a PDF that indicates what files I am downloading. Some may not be
necessary, but I grabbed them just in case. I am now waiting for the downloads to finish.
Are there any issues I need to be aware of as per installing these files over the top
of the currently installed “trial” system?
These files do look suspiciously like the ones Brent downloaded last month, I just
gotta mention that.

OK! The RPM’s appear to be installed, even though it says some stuff about AN
EVALUATION LICENSE! (Is some license supposed to be getting installed by that
./install_script? hmm, perhaps there WAS more to it than just some GUI…..)
The documentation goes on to explain that the messages and help are under
/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/<locale> and yes there is some us_EN stuff there! Gratifying
that we don’t need Chinese.
Next we are warned to download the latest fix pack level, to ensure compatibility. I
click on the URL and go to Download > Fixes by version > bla bla bla > and I end up
at
fftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/server/v5r3/Linux/5.3.4.0/x86_64/TIVsm-server-5.3.4-0.x86_64.tar.bz2
I think I’ll wget this file…. appears to be getting OK… done. I want to make sure
that we did get the latest RPM’s, (They were downloaded about a month ago), so I go
back to www-112.ibm.com to double-check. Pretty sure all the packages there have not
been updated since we got them last, so let us continue with the installation….
The documentation goes on to talk about compatibility levels, and then to a page
titled “Verifying your Installation”, and goes on to talk about backing up client
data from a backup-archive client. Whoah! I haven’t even installed the fix-pack yet!
Guess I better do that.
what the heck is BZ2? k a quick google says tar will do it. so I extract it. it
overwrote all the stuff in the current directory, I guess that’s my fault, didn’t
specify a target path. 🙁 wow, a bunch of stuff! pretty much everything that used to
be there, got overwritten? I don’t know it’s not clear.

Last week sent this to Scott saselvig@us.ibm.com
Hello Scott! Remember months ago, you came & talked to us about Tivoli? Perhaps not.
But anyway, we bought it and I downloaded the package I think we needed. it’s getting
some error on installation. I contacted IBM support already; I guess somebody is
gonna call me back as far as that goes.
Just touching base with you.
